Children’s Museum and UW-Fond du Lac Offer Free Innovative Science Program

On Saturday, September 29 our community’s children and their families will have the opportunity to look, listen, feel, touch and discover the wonders of science during “Scientific Saturday” 10 am – 1 pm in Room S231 of the Science Building at UW-Fond du Lac (400 University Drive).

The Children’s Museum of Fond du Lac together with local experts from UW-Fond du Lac will co-host a day to explore the marvels of science through hands-on activities and demonstrations featuring volcanic eruptions, weather, water flow, glacial movement, rocks and minerals and even plate tectonics!

“This is a fantastic collaboration that demonstrates community partnerships, civic engagement, and a strong commitment to STEM learning”, UW-Fond du Lac Dean and CEO, Dr. John Short said.

UW-Fond du Lac Associate Professor of Geography & Geology, Michael Jurmu, will be leading the day’s program and visitors through a variety of exciting and educational experiments, engaging everyone in the phenomena and power of science. Jurmu, one of four recipients of the UW System’s Alliant Energy Underkofler Excellence in Teaching Award, is known for his focus on service learning with active engagement of students in the classroom and ability to translate information to accommodate varying levels of understanding.  Not only does he instruct college students, but he also reaches out to young learners such as kids at the Boys & Girls Club, elementary school students, and Children’s Museum program participants.

“Science shouldn’t be a word that’s feared”, Jurmu said.  “Most science can easily be explained using demonstrationsand simple concepts. We hope to bring some of these ideas to our Scientific Saturday.”

This event is free to the public.  The interactive stations are great for family learning and “scientists” of all ages. Participants can stop in anytime between 10 am and 1 pm. For more information, contact the Children’s Museum at 920-929-0707 or visit www.cmfdl.org.

“Scientific Saturday” is an extension of the Wisconsin Science Festival held in Madison, WI September 27-30 www.WiSciFest.org.
