Travel to Florida Keys part of UW-Fond du Lac summer course
Fond du Lac, Wis. – A three-credit special topics course on the ecology of the Florida Keys will be offered by UW-Fond du Lac this summer. Information sessions about the course will be held at 6 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 30; Thursday, Feb. 9 and Monday, Feb. 27 in the Art Building, Room 211 at UW-Fond du Lac, 400 University Dr.
Biology of the Florida Keys Marine Environment (BIO 298), includes a travel portion Aug. 8-Aug. 13, 2012. During the travel portion of the course, a typical day is spent doing two to three snorkeling field trips to various ecosystems. In addition to the field trips, students will participate in lab and lectures related to the field trips.
The class will focus on the ecology of the Keys and the Southern Florida ecosystem. Major topics include invertebrate diversity, sea grass ecology, coral reef ecology, and identification of reef fish, sea turtles and mangrove ecology.
Pre-course/travel activities will include a sea turtle stranding activity, sea turtle discussion and a sea turtle identification lab. The course instructor is Trish Strohfeldt, UW-Fond du Lac biology instructor.
The fee of $1,599 includes three credits, air travel, lodging and meals. Financial aid may be available to UW-Fond du Lac degree seeking students.
