UW-Fond du Lac and Marian University present free concerts

UW-Fond du Lac and Marian University music departments will join together for two free concerts in May.

On Friday, May 2, the Community Concert Band will perform at 7:30 p.m. in the Prairie Theater at UW-Fond du Lac, 400 University Dr.

Featured will be the music of British composer Ralph Vaughan Williams including his “English Folk Songs Suite” and “Sea Songs.” Other works on the program are a movement from Samuel Hazo’s “Minnesota Portraits” called “Across the Halfpipe” depicting the art of snowboarding,  the Irish folk song “Down by the Salley Gardens” arranged by Michael Sweeney, and a suite of music composed by John Williams from the film “Superman.”  David Hein, Marian University music professor will be a guest piano soloist on a piece entitled “Walden” by composer Chris Sharp.

On Monday, May 5, a Chamber Music Concert will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the Hornung Student Center at Marian University, 45 S. National Ave.

This concert features a saxophone quartet and steel drum band. The saxophone quartet program includes an arrangement of a Haydn string quartet to Renaissance vocal music and even a jazz standard.  The steel drum band will perform “Bailando La Soca,” “Carpe Dium,” “Not a Care,” and Bob Marley’s “Three Little Birds.” 

The concert band and saxophone quartet are directed by Brian J. Lydeen, music professor and director of bands & jazz studies at Marian University.  The steel drum band is directed by Scott Elford, percussion instructor for both campuses. The groups performing include students from both universities along with community members.

On Friday, May 9, the Fond du Lac Chamber Singers will be presenting "An Evening of Sacred Music" at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, May 9, at St. Mary's, 59 E. Merrill Ave., Fond du Lac.

 The free concert will feature the Mass, but in a unique format. The Kyrie will be from Bob Chilcott's "Little Jazz Mass."  The Gloria will be from Schubert's "Mass in G."  Leonard Bernstein will provide the Santus and the Mozart's Missa Brevis will provide the Benedictus. Robert Ray's "Gospel Mass" will feature tenor soloists Chad Kraus and Devin Dehne on the Agnus Dei.

The Chamber Singers group is in residence at UW-Fond du Lac and is directed by Cara Davis. They will also perform the Brahms Motet "Schaffe in mire, Gott, ein rein Herz" and "Come, You Who Are Filled" featuring Devin Dehne on the clarinet. The group will be accompanied by Michael Dunphy and Paul Thelen. Featured soloists include Grace Jones, Ralph Schwartz and John Emery.
