Name: Amy Bertram

Hometown:  Malone, WI

Career program/major:  Education

Age: 42

What led you to choose your program or major?

I volunteer at a local middle school, helping out in a special education classroom. I found that I have a passion for teaching and wanting kids to succeed, and I want to be an advocate for them.

Why did you decide to become a student at UW-Fond du Lac?

I wanted to start slow, and UW-Fond du Lac is close to home and offers flexible scheduling, which is what I need.

Is there a professor or staff member at UW-Fond du Lac who made a difference in your life or inspired you?  The staff at the Solution Center were so helpful. It was a little overwhelming to make the decision to go back to school, and I wasn't sure exactly where to start. They gave me guidance and were encouraging through the admission process.

What is one piece of advice you would give to an incoming UW-Fond du Lac student?

I was out of school for 20 years before deciding to go back.  It was challenging, especially in the beginning, but with challenge comes growth. I would like to encourage other non-traditional students that it is never too late to go back to school and you are never too old to learn!

When not in class or studying, what keeps you busy?

I am married and have three children. I work part time as a registered nurse. I also volunteer at a school and am very active in my church.

What are your future education or career plans?

I would like to earn a degree in education and work specifically in special education.
