This is one of Shakespeare’s most popular comedies, believed to have been written in the mid-1590s.
Theseus, duke of Athens, captures and captivates Hippolyta, queen of the Amazons. The play begins shortly before their nuptials. Egeus brings his errant daughter, Hermia, before the duke demanding that she marries his choice for a husband, Demetrius, or be put to death. Lysander loves Hermia and says the well-known line - “The course of true love never did run smooth.”
